Key #2: When Opportunity Knocks

Christopher Hitchens, the British-American author once said, “It’s true what they say about the United States. It is a land of opportunity.”

America is a special place. It’s one of the few countries in the world where a citizen can start from anywhere and go anywhere.

You can start out in the lowest income bracket and get to the highest.

You can start in the most uncouth and disdained social strata and become the person who other people want to be.

You can be ANYTHING you want, and you can do ANYTHING you want.

All you have to do is put in the time and take advantage of the many opportunities the country offers.

In high school, take the most rigorous curriculum offered, and put in as much study time as it takes to excel. Play a broad range of sports, and show up to every practice. Participate in extra-curricular activities like student government, and run for executive positions. Get a part-time job, and learn how to budget the money you earn.

In college, plan out your course of study ahead of time so you can graduate when you want to. Meet with your advisor regularly and ask questions. Go to networking events, and make it a priority to find and take the initiative to meet with people in your industry who are where you want to end up. Be friendly and likable, and you will be offered internships and paid work experience opportunities.
